Combating Child Labour (2007 – 2009)

It is estimated that there are at least 3000 children below the age of 18 currently working in the limestone quarries in Egypt, considered one of the worst forms of child labour. Alfanar provided the Wadi El Nil Association with a grant to tackle the issue of child labour in the quarries. The grant supported the establishment of a micro-credit and training programme aimed at enabling families to start up small projects that would allow them to generate an alternative income to that earned by children working in local quarries.
