Bashayer Women’s Centre (2007 – ongoing)

Alfanar supports Bashayer which acts as a community hub in Helwan, through which women can obtain a source of income, together with health care, legal aid and other essential services. At any one time, 200-300 women earn an income through Bashayer’s crochet production unit. The unit supports the income of its women members as well as providing an independently generated income source for the organisation. Alfanar also supports Bashayer’s health clinic in Arab Ghoneim focusing in particular on the needs of the women and children. Bashayer uses a community-based membership model for this service which is innovative in Egypt, and which makes the service cost-effective for the community and encourages families to draw on the clinic rather than neglect health problems.
