Assisting the Potters Community of Al Fustat (2008 – 2010)

Although pottery making is an ancient craft and constitutes an important sector of Egyptian cultural heritage, being part of the informal economy deprives its craftsmen and women of many rights. The Egyptian Association for Social and Economic Rights allows potters from the district of Al Fustat, whose own kilns have been demolished under new environmental regulations, to use the centre’s environmentally friendly kilns. It has also established a training programme through Alfanar to train young men and women on innovative and improved production techniques, thus developing the craft, reviving it and preserving it within the community’s younger generation. The project also provides legal awareness and services that work towards registering potters in the workers’ federation, thus paving the way for their formal representation as a sector and giving them voice. Informality denies them access to government services, leading to their increased marginalization and exclusion from any available social safety nets.
